The way in which ICT can support and involve all learners challenges traditional ideas of learning and teaching (BECTa 2000 p 1-2). Students with learning difficulties have the opportunity to learn and explore new ways of learning through a range of multimedia, games, touch screens, modified hardware and speech recognition systems (BECTa 2000 p 1-2). These advances in technology allow for students with learning disorders to receive a new type of learning which can assist with literacy and numeracy support through introducing and applying learning concepts (BECTa 2000 p 1-2).

The importance of learning and ICT is that the process of learning can be adapted and changed for students with special needs. Technology can be adapted through use of specialist hardware and software. This allows for equity in the classroom and enhances the level of enjoyment for these students who are often quite keen to use the technology.
